Just the Facts:
Google Ads Edition

How They Work:
Google Ads is a pay-per-click service that allows you to get to the top of searching engine rankings in the “ads” section. If you pay more than your competitors and have a better landing page you show up better.

Why They Matter:
Large competitors often flood the top of search engines. By strategically bidding on your most profitable services you can get above them and make the first impression on a potential customer.

Activate Google Ads If...

  • You need customers/sales now
  • You need trackable data to prove how much it is costing you per conversion
  • Your website is modern and attractive, capable of converting customers
  • You’ve got a specific service or offer you want to put in front of potential customers

Avoid Google Ads If...

  • You have a budget less than $500 a month
  • Your website is very old or non existent
  • You don’t require immediate conversions and would prefer to build brand awareness (see: facebook ads)

How does the bidding system work?

Google Ads works on a pay-per-click or pay-per-impression basis. A click is when someone actually visits your website by clicking on the ad. An impression is when your ad shows up in someone’s search. So if you pay-per-impression, it doesn’t matter if they click or not – you are paying. Generally marketing companies will run pay-per-impression if they want to make their numbers look impressive (“we got you 50 thousand impressions!”). Of course, that is irrelevant compared to actually getting people to convert into customers.

When you activate a pay-per-click campaign you can determine how much you are willing to pay for every click. Google then compares your bid to other people in your area bidding on the same words or phrases. If you are bidding more you will likely show up higher. However, Google also factors in page relevancy, meaning Google will show ads more frequently if it thinks the landing page is highly relevant and in good standing.

What is page relevancy?
Page relevancy is one of the factors Google Ads use to determine how well your ads will show up in search results. Using a sophisticated algorithm, Google can determine if your ads are actually pitching the same services that you describe on your landing pages. It will also take into consideration the loading speed of your website, your overall online reputation (do other good websites link to you?), and more. Our goal is to get your relevancy score as high as possible so we don’t have to bid as high on keyphrases in order to show up well. The best way to ensure this is to grant us access to your website so we can adjust your landing pages or create new ones.

How much to spend on a campaign?
There really is no maximum threshold for how much you could spend in a campaign, but too little limits our ability to gather data and make improvements. That’s why we recommend a minimum of $500 on the actual ad spend. If this is your first Google Ads campaign we won’t push you to overspend. In fact, we prefer moderate spending until we can really dial in your ads and landing pages and get the most bang for your buck.

What are negative keyphrases?

Negative keyphrases are an important factor in making sure the people clicking on your ads are relevant. By using negative keyphrases we can actually eliminate certain words or phrases that are similar to your service but not good conversions. For example, if you do AC Repair but don’t service automobile air conditioning, we would use a negative keyphrase to eliminate people searching for automobiles.

How Does Apsos track results?
Google Ads have inherently useful statistics right on their interface but we like to take it a step further. We prefer to integrate google analytics into your website as well as install tracking pixels to follow the users behavior as they click on the ad and experience your website. We also prefer to integrate a tracking phone number so that we can record phone calls coming in specifically from this campaign.

Is Google Local Services different?
Yes, Google Local Services is a pay-per-lead service as opposed to pay-per-click. For PPL you only get charged when a user goes into your Google Local Services profile and calls the number. The upside is that leads tend to be higher quality. The downside is that each call costs about $20-$30. We believe Google Local Services is worth the money and often recommend it as one of the very first tactics a service company should try.
